A call for implementation of the standard pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) nomenclature

Updated: Feb 5, 2020

FAIRification of data associated with hPSC is essential for reproducibility of research and to increase knowledge and utility of available resources and data. A standard nomenclature for hPSC has been developed and an easy to use open source tool implemented in the European Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Registry (hPSCreg) public database of hPSCs, in order to generate a standard name for each cell line and to automatically register it in a central accessible registry. Today, more than 5000 hPSC lines are registered already in hPSCreg. However, at the same time many lines are established, published and used, with no standard identifier and the associated data can thus not be FAIRified. Moreover, in some cases the same name has been used for different cell lines.

The International Stem Cell Banking Initiative (ISCBI) strongly supports the standard nomenclature and registration of hPSC – standard names / identifiers in the central database hPSCreg. Read more about this in the ISCBI Statement
